It is a rough listen but it is definitely an interesting snapshot into that point in their lives, especially when you watch Some Kind of Monster for further context. I really wish Robert had played on the album. A couple of guitar solos for Kirk would have been nice too. Vocally and lyrically, I like how James pushed himself a bit outside of his comfort zone. For their newer albums I definitely prefer Death Magnetic and Hardwired to Saint Anger. I tried to listen to it once, for about 90 seconds or so. The production and sound was so horrible that I gave up. But I doubt that, even with semi decent production, it would reach the heights of Master of Puppets. James summed it up nicely: I’m just used to having the drummer to the beat part, you know what I mean? Holding it together.
